À propos de cet épisode
In the early 12th century, the Almoravid empire—which had united Morocco, Al-Andalus, and the trans-Saharan trade—began to unravel. This episode dives into the rise of Ibn Tumart, a Masmuda Berber reformer who denounced Almoravid scholars as anthropomorphists and triggered a religious revolution. We trace his journey from study in Baghdad and Al-Andalus to his public confrontation with the Almoravid sultan Ali ibn Yusuf in Marrakech. After retreating to his mountain stronghold of Tinmel, Ibn Tumart built a messianic movement around the concept of tawhid, or strict monotheism. His successor Abd al-Mu'min would go on to topple the Almoravids and found the Almohad caliphate. We also explore the role of the Masmuda confederation, the Battle of al-Buhayra, and how Ibn Tumart's legacy reshaped Moroccan identity.
